Detailed bio
At 17, Loïca, Ángela Valenzuela, left her hometown Rancagua to experience the world and explore ways of responding to the climate crisis. This journey has taken her to Canada, USA, France, Colombia, and Finland. Over time, she has discovered her voice both as a nature advocate and singer-songwriter. The connection between the environment and music is the backbone of Loïca’s identity. Her songs spring up as a refuge that helps her to stay grounded in the face of climate devastation, in her search for geographies of hope, and music as an act of restoration for our wounded relationship with nature.
As a sensitive listener, Loïca could not turn her attention away from the sounds of environmental devastation in the world, the growing silence of the spring, the cracking sounds of desertification, and the stories of activists fighting for water in Chile. She has therefore constantly combined her music making with activism and community-oriented work. In 2019, she became one the key coordinators of the youth climate justice movement in Chile and Latin America. She was a spokesperson for Fridays for Future Chile in several international spaces such as the C40 Climate Conference in Copenhagen 2019, and UN Climate Conference COP25 in Madrid, 2019. After experiencing burnout, she decided to pause her activism and focus on music and community arts as a way to respond to the world around her. She worked as a creative and community arts organizer for Greenpeace International, and led collective art and songwriting workshops in Chile, Tunisia and Lebanon. Loïca now lives in Finland, where she is working on a new album inspired by climate grief, loss, and geographies of hope.
